About us

Anahita, the Persian goddess of Flowing Water and Fertility, brought upon Earth the goodness of life, cleanliness, health and prosperity. Ancient civilizations flourished by the banks of rivers and on sea ports, waterways built in the cities allowed for sanitary living conditions, and made cultivation possible. As ancient man started depending on agriculture, using and understanding water better and using it better in his everyday life, humankind flourished, building new landmarks of prosperity, and civilization all over the globe. And thus, “Anahita” in Sanskrit meaning the nurturer of food, crops and herds, the giver, doing good for others. In modern times, we have been able to clone babies, but nothing has been able to clone and produce water in the test tube. Life on Mars or any other planet is sort by finding traces of water, so where there is water, there is a possibility of life.

Our NGO, named after the Goddess Anahita, also follows the principals of flowing water. It flows into places that are parched and barren, helping to heal people, mend their lives and livelihood, and make a dent in the prosperity of the area. Our primary focus being in facilitating healthcare and wellness, initiating medical care from the best hospitals and doctors in the country, taking care of mending the body, and then helping mend the mind and soul, by making better livelihoods. And thus our motto is “Helping to heal”.

As we move amongst rural areas and semi-urban sections of metro cities, we come across a cross section of women who need to be helped in more ways than we think. Healthcare amongst women being the most neglected, we strive to help them understand issues of personal hygiene, and female sanitation. Our idea is to empower women to look after themselves, and build themselves as a contributor to their family and themselves. In the process, we help shield them from issues faced by all our working women, in the form of sexual harassment, in the streets, by the family members and at the workplace, so that these women learn the wonderous world of living in dignity and fearlessness. From setting up micro business units making pickles and napkins, to training them to be healthcare assistants, Anahita is a women centric organization, backed by lawyers and visionaries who appreciate our work and our vision.
Our endeavor is to shift away from the archaic sewing machine and create newer, more futuristic and better means of livelihood, that can give the woman not only a secure source of income in her place of domicile, but also benefit the local residents, largely, bringing a feeling of respect and dignity in earning a standard of living.

Our other vertical looks into bringing income opportunities to the women in their homes. We have a brand of pickles, chutneys, snacks and short eats made from home-grown organic products, made by these village women who cannot step out of their homes for social reasons, yet want to make a mark for themselves and want to earn a stipend and respect. It’s called Chatori by Anahita. Similarly, these women make high end quilts, cushions covers, sew clothes, napkins, table linen and other decorative items, complete with croche and embroidery for export to the Western World. Our work has spread to several villages in the Delhi/NCR area, like Jaunti, in North-West Delhi and Bashirpur in Western UP.

We assist in investigating alternate sources of income and income generation, bringing into the village micro-insurance options, micro-banking, micro and small scale industries and technology guided alternate agriculture and cottage industries. Help from our channel partners and other organizations, in Solar power generation, roads by new soil stabilization technology, ground water conservation, bio-toilets, rain water harvesting techniques, bio-gas plants and vocational training, all help to change the way the village looks, feels and functions!

Working towards enabling womento be a force to reckon with, we strongly advocate the compliance to POSH Act 2013, in the urban and semi-urban areas. Our panel of lawyers have worked extensively with women’s rights issues, and fought tirelessly to make society give women the dignity they truly deserve, in the home and outside, as a woman of the home to the women who wears the pants. We conduct trainings for organizations to make their workforce aware of sexual harassment of women at the workplace, about what is acceptable behavior and what is not. Our lawyers are trained to assist with formation of Internal Committees and their functioning, conducting enquiries on cases of sexual harassments reported, filing of Annual Reports and making the organization more women-friendly. We are open to empanelment with companies for the same.

We are a small group of doers. No, we don’t have big names on our board, we don’t have oodles of funding, we don’t have big benefactors, we struggle to get our work off the ground, but as we move along in doing work honestly, tirelessly, innovatively and diligently, we show the world that we are serious about the work we do. Individuals and corporate entities make their contributions for the work we do, for the way we tirelessly strive to make a difference in the lives of people who get lost in oblivion
